About Karen X. Tulchinsky
Karen X. Tulchinsky is a Story Editor and writer on THE GUARD, a one-hour television drama series about the Canadian Coast Guard for Global TV. She is a graduate of the prestigious Canadian Film Centre’s Professional Screenwriting Programme, where she wrote two feature length screenplays and a short film, STRAIGHT IN THE FACE, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and was broadcast on Showcase TV. She was awarded a B.C. Film Screenwriter’s Fellowship to write a feature length screenplay under the mentorship of veteran screenwriter Peggy Thompson (BETTER THAN CHOCOLATE). Tulchinsky wrote an episode of ROBSON ARMS, produced by Omni Film Productions for CTV and co-wrote, FLOORED BY LOVE, for Chum/Citytv’s anthology series, STORIES ABOUT LOVE.
She is the award-winning author of LOVE RUINS EVERYTHING, a novel which was named one of the top ten books of 1998 by the Bay Area Reporter and has been translated into German and French, its sequel, LOVE AND OTHER RUINS, and IN HER NATURE, a collection of short fiction which won the 1996 VanCity Book Prize, B.C.’s largest literary award. Her screenplays have been short-listed in the Praxis Screenwriting competition and the L.A. based Chesterfield Film Company Writer’s Project. She has written for numerous magazines and newspapers, including The Vancouver Sun, The Georgia Straight, Now Magazine, Xtra West, Canadian Screenwriter and The National Post, and has taught creative writing at Langara College and Screenwriting at the UBC Writing Centre.
Her latest novel, THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES LAPINSKY, a finalist for the Toronto Book Award, and the winner of The Vancouver Public Library’s One Book One Vancouver 2008 was released by Raincoast Books to critical acclaim. B.C. BookWorld said of the novel, “Karen X. Tulchinsky does for Toronto what Mordecai Richler did for Montreal.” Since its release Tulchinsky has read from the novel across North America, and has appeared on Imprint for TV Ontario, CBC Radio’s Sounds Like Canada, with Shelagh Rodgers and Writers and Company with Eleanor Wachtel. Tulchinsky’s screenplay adaptation of The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky is currently in development. She was the Story Editor on the documentary television series, KINK for Showcase Television, is story editing ANTI DIVA, for Submission Films and is story editor and field director on THE CRAZY CANUCKS OF LONGBOARDING, a feature length documentary for CTV and THIS LAND IS OURS, a feature length documentary about the Canadian Rangers in the far north, in development with The History Channel.. Karen was born in Toronto, and now lives in Vancouver.
